The Atlantic Ocean

The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest of the world's oceans and covers approximately 20 per cent of the Earth's surface. It occupies an elongated S-shaped basin extending in a north-south direction. It's divided into the North Atlantic and South Atlantic by equatorial counter-currents at about 8 degrees north latitude.

The Atlantic Ocean

The principal feature of the bottom topography of the Atlantic Ocean is a great submarine mountain range called the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It extends from Iceland in the North to approximately 58 deg south latitude, reaching a maximum width of about 1,600 km (1,000 mi).

The North Atlantic Current, which moves east by northeast and will assist the rowers, is a current of warm water which is a continuation of the Gulf Stream.

Near to the British Isles, the current splits into two branches. One goes south, the other goes north and Pink Lady must 'thread the needle' between them and find her way into the English Channel, past the Isles of Scilly and on to Falmouth.
