Message Board - Week 1

Message from Bun

I send you all affection and good thoughts from London, and a million kisses to Jonny.

(Mr JG, thank you so much for all the cards; I can't wait to be waiting for you in Falmouth).

Message from Meg

From one of Jon's condom collection winners.
There are two kinds of people: those who don't do what they want to do, so they write down in a diary about what they haven't done, and those who haven't time to write about it because they're out doing it.- Richard Flournoy and Lewis R. Foster

Some very few people manage both !

Keep up those rhythmic strokes, it's going to be a hell of a climax.

Godspeed.

Message from Wilf Banks

Hi guys. I live in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. I read about your record breaking attempt in the Sunday Hearld (the paper out of Halifax, N.S.). Living on an island we love the water. We love to swim and play in it in the summer, freeze it and skate on it in the winter, (I coach hockey). We are following your progres on our PC. I would like to say "good luck", have a safe trip, and as we would say, "keep your stick on the ice". But it would be more fitting to say, "keep your oars in the water". Have a safe one!!!! P.S. Doing any fishing?

Message from Alvin Pittman

Message from Valerie

Hi Pink Ladies

Made you my home page and am checking the state of play daily. You're all either completely mad or excedingly courageous and talented. Amazing! Good luck and God speed to the four of you on the high seas. Knowing your weather through the grand banks was only maginally worse than in SW12 this week must be a comfort.

No Friday Microwave Man is a bitch but the weekly report some consolation.

A thinly disguised fan letter to JG from a basement in W1.

Message from Trevor Bennett

Hi fellows.
I pulled on a lot of paddles in my lifetime when we had no roads in NL. Maybe you should contact me "chair person NL heritage tree". You should be part of NL Heritage Tree ( HT)interpretation book now being prepared. There are 50 heritage images on the NL HT.

Good luck

Message from Corinne

Hello darleenks! Checking your website every day, and it STILL took me this long to discover the button to send a message! give that girl a PhD eh...

I am SO pleased for you the weather has picked up. OK so you've sent the tornadoes this way, getting soaking wet on my bike, that's ok, anything to support you! I hope you get back fast because I can't wait to raise a glass of champs to your successful attempt at breaking the record. Thinking about you LOTS, and busily planning the most delicious 7-course menu for when you get back (yep, Stacey told me about how much you're enjoying your evening meals....). Keep posting those pictures on the website; it's really nice to catch a glimpse, somehow it makes you seem almost here already! Lots of love

xxx Corinne

Message from Clare Galt

Hi Guys. I'd like to know if Jon is attached!! No seriously your expedition has really grabbed my attention and imagination. I've always had a yearning for endurance trials (aside from bringing up kids) and having had an old fashioned navigator for a father (dining room table always covered with charts and plotting) I'm wondering what to do with the rest of my life. I need to find what is inside myself after all the dross is washed away. You guys are certainly having a good opportunity to do that. God's speed ....I'll be watching along the way and if progress is astonishingly fast ...may make it to Falmouth to see you land. Otherwise will be away with kids (fun but also soul-searching) Hope the wind is behind you! Claire xxxx

Message from The Gills

Message from Peter Chalker

Hello Peter, John, Jonathan and Mark,

From the map on the website it looks like you had a couple of bad days and remained rather stationary. How are things now?

In St. Philips it is sunny and warm with light winds. It is 7:02 PM-NST on Thur. July 8-04.

How are the back muscles? What do you do when you are not rowing? Sleep I imagine. What else?

Thinking of you all. Godspeed.

Peter Chalker

Hi Jonathan
The great British tradition goes on - wonderful. It brings back memories of my journey from Saglek, Newfoundland back to the UK - I too had my fair share of worries but my comfort zone was great in my little R44 helicopter - I think I prefer my mode of transport. Courage - have a great adventure and come home safe.
Best wishes Jennifer Murray

Hi Guys!! your web site is GREAT!I have been following Anne, Jean Lukes and you 4 apples!!Way to go, you guys are so humorous , and it seem's like you are keeping your spirts up. Wishing you much success on this wonderful venture.I started watching ocean rowers a few years ago , when I was out swordfishing with my husband and we came across an ore. It belonged to Jean Lukes of France. Jean Lukes had to abandon his boat when he ran into problems. We found it ,and towed it home . jean retrieved his boat in Feb, and is now attemting to cross the ocean.

Wishing you smooth rowing ... take good care

Message from Tony Hillier

For several years now I have been fishing on the sea where you guys are crossing...I know the sea is a formidable one at times but my hat is off to you guys...It takes a great deal of nerve to do the task your doing...I hope you the very best in your endeavours and may god sail with you...cheers gents...great job.

Message from Dawson Pynn

You guys are crazy!!!! Ya got more guts than a codfish to battle the North Atlantic In such a small vessel. I worked for 10 years on a offshore research vessel and know what the sea conditions can get like out there on the Grand Banks. This time of the year isn't so bad The weather is fairly calm. I know you are well prepared and I wish you the best of luck. So keep the keel beneath you and the sky up. Must be awful trying to get a nap in that little thing rolling all over the place. A little tip is to use whatevers handy and wedge yourself in the bunk. We used to use our lifejacket and an extra pillow to wedge ourselves in the bunk. The plus is your lifejacket is alway close.Remember one hand for yourself and one hand for the ship. Happy rowing mates!

From a fellow seadog

Dawson

Message from Paul and Jane Barnes

Dear John

Jane and I have been following your progress daily - I have been looking to send you a message and have only just found the right button!!

Has been really windy around here too - Jane and I had a fantasctic sail on the Hobie the other day. Sunshine and lots of white horses (but not 2.5 - 3.0 m)- I suggested as the bow began to bury that she need to move around to balance the boat, I can't she said 'I'm terrified'... next moment she did move and went around behind me and landed on the tiller bar shrieking as she went. We are looking after the boat honest!!

Sounds like you guy's need to get rowing again - don't rest for long!! Best wishes to you all.

Love Paul and Jane

Message from Peter Chalker

Hello Pink Lady,
I watched you row out of St. John's harbour this afternoon and ironically The Sir Bedivere which was in port also left just after you. Sir Bedivere was one of King Arthur's strongest knights as his name in Welsh means " of mighty sinew". He threw Excalibur into the lake and saw a hand rise out of the waves to catch it.

I hope that you will see nothing like that as you make your way across the Atlantic and all of our best wishes go with you all. Fair rowing and may you all be "of mighty sinew." God speed.

Message from Lesley

I doubt very much if you want to be inundated with messages from complete strangers, but I have written to Jonathan G occasionally (at The Times) and said I'd follow his progress (husband came in talking about it too): please wish him luck - my name will mean nothing to him, but I'm an Army wife and was excited about him committing himself to this challenge.

In your updates, would you add (can you?) distance travelled the previous day? I know nothing about sailing and this would mean more to me...

Never mind if you can't. We'll keep watching!!!!

GOOD LUCK everyone.

Message from Peter Chalker

Hi All,
Great to get the update today. Seems like you may run into a bit o'weather according to your map. Hang in there. Question: When you say you are on a course of 170 what does that number refer to?
How's the food? Can you cook aboard or do you use packets of prepared food?
Weather in St. John's is grey and overcast, 12C, winds SE 10-15 kph.

All the best.

Row, row, row your boat.
