The North Atlantic has proved to be extremely dangerous. The
Titanic sank in these waters. When comparing the vast size
of that ship against the Pink Lady, which is only 10m long,
it becomes clear what the crew will be up against.
The crew will need to overcome many obstacles
to successfully complete their bid. From Newfoundland, one
of the first obstacles they face will be icebergs, both above
and below the sea level. The North Atlantic is known for its
cold seas, huge waves and extreme weather conditions.
If the team overcome these obstacles whilst
keeping morale high, then that will be a major achievement
in itself. If the worst happens, it is possible to re-capsize
the boat. However, the extreme weather is likely to cause
difficulties to the team if it becomes a regular occurrence.
A window of three days has been allocated
in order to get the best weather conditions possible for the
team to start the challenge. The task facing the four men
as they row away from the shores of Newfoundland, is unlikely
to be helped by extremely cold and windy weather. The team
hopes to use the Gulf Stream to their advantage in order to
help them. This should provide slightly warmer waters, but
there is still the possibility of encountering sharks, drifting
containers and whales, who are naturally curious animals and
are easily capable of destroying the boat.
